One Egg a Day cracks child undernourishment with the help of an AI Chatbot

Stories from the Digital Transformation Hub.

In 2024 the Digital Transformation team supported over 14,000 not-for-profit staff and volunteers across the Asia-Pacific region with digital capability building. This year we deepened our commitment to AI as a tool for social impact.

Nine organisations that participated in the first phase of the Asia-Pacific Digital Transformation Program were selected as grantees to further develop AI solutions to leverage technology and increase community impact.

One of the most inspiring examples from our program was the Edufarmers Foundation in Indonesia. Edufarmers focused on transforming it’s One Egg a Day child nutrition initiative with a custom-built AI solution: the ZeroStunting chatbot.

This interactive WhatsApp-based chatbot is designed to help families improve nutrition practices through daily check-ins, reminders, and tailored advice. It collects real-time data on children’s weight and height, reminds caregivers to provide their egg each day, and offers personalised responses to common concerns, such as “What can I cook with the ingredients I have?”

“We developed automation tools that collect data and improve the quality of engagement our community health workers can have with families,” said Lukmanul Hafiz, Head of the Stunting Program at Edufarmers.

The results so far include:

  • More than 28,000 eggs delivered to children
  • Severe stunting declined by 32%
  • Number of underweight children was reduced by 46%

Beyond efficiency gains, the chatbot has become a trusted source of support. “Even outside of the reporting system, the AI can answer nutrition questions and reassure parents in real time,” said Hafiz.

With this project, Edufarmers has shown how locally driven, AI-enabled solutions can deliver measurable, life-changing impact, and how digital transformation can be grounded in care, culture, and community.
