2025 Digital Technology in the Not-for-Profit Sector Report

The highly anticipated 2025 Digital Technology in the Not-for-Profit Sector report is here, built from insights shared by 800+ NFPs across data, cyber, digital transformation and AI.

This year reflects a decade-long milestone of how charities and community organisations utilise technology to foster social impact.

While this year's report shows evidence our sector has made significant progress in adopting tools and infrastructure, it shows where challenges and risks continue to grow, and how there's much more to do to achieve further improvements.

Thank you to the 824 organisations that participated in this survey. Your contributions help us further advocate for digital upscaling of the sector.

What our sector leaders are saying about the survey report:

"I want to see Australia's charities and not-for-profits thrive, and be able to strengthen social capital ties that bind Australians together. We can only do that if organisations are able to operate effectively. What this report shows is that organisations are doing better on areas like cloud computing, but still have a long way to go in areas like cyber security (and) multifactor authentication."

Hon. Dr Andrew Leigh MP, Minister for Productivity, Competition, Charities and Treasury.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this report. I can see immediately the benefits of using AI tools to help streamline that process, and anything you can do to streamline the grunt or repetitive work I think is of benefit when it can free you up for other types of activities and processes. But the overwhelming stat that leaps out is just how few organisations actually have an AI policy in place. If people do absolutely nothing else as a result of reading this report, can I please ask that you think about doing an AI policy before you start using AI tools. Australia and New Zealand are the least trusting of AI systems, and that's a good thing because we have to use these tools responsibly, safely, with safeguards. I would love to see those numbers reverse next year.”

Beth Worrell, Responsible AI Manager, National AI Centre

“Digital technology and AI has the potential to improve efficiencies and outcomes for an over-burdened and resource-stretched sector, but we’re seeing a major gap in the capability levels that could help close inequality gaps in our society. Australia needs a unified, national approach to digital capability improvement in the not-for-profit sector. This sector delivers critical services on behalf of the community – so it should also be supported with the tools, training and infrastructure to deliver them safely in the digital age.”

David Spriggs, CEO, Infoxchange.

“I want to acknowledge Infoxchange and the work that goes into putting this report together. It’s impressive to have over 700 people complete a survey anywhere, anytime. And it’s great to have this kind of recurring benchmark for where the sector is in terms of technology.
“We are very lucky, in many ways, to have this report. I can tell you as an advocate, it’s invaluable. It’s invaluable to be able to talk to politicians and policy makers about the state of the sector and the evidence to back it up. We don’t get a lot of funding for this kind of cross-sector research that Infoxchange has done here.
“This is an incredibly useful report for us as advocates, and I look forward to championing the messages that are so clear to me about how the sector needs greater support if we are to be as effective as we can be.”

David Crosbie, CEO, Community Council of Australia.

“Thank you to Infoxchange for this report. I love a report where I can see pictures and practical information; it was a pleasure to read and would commend people to do so.”

Sue Woodward AM, Commissioner, ACNC.
